Grayscale Zcash ETF Tops $500M as DCG Affiliate Adds $100M

Key Points

  • Grayscale’s ZCSH surpassed $500 million in AUM two weeks after beginning NYSE Arca trading on August 25.
  • DCG International, an affiliate of Grayscale’s parent company, contributed about $100 million of ZEC in exchange for ZCSH shares.
  • ZEC climbed above $1,200 in September, reaching its highest price since October 2016.

Grayscale’s Zcash exchange-traded product has exceeded $500 million in assets under management, but regulatory filings show that part of the increase came from within Grayscale’s corporate family. DCG International Investments exchanged 85,705.32563297 ZEC for approximately $100 million of ZCSH shares on September 8. Separately, Grayscale says the product attracted more than $70 million in cumulative inflows after beginning NYSE Arca trading on August 25. The milestone coincides with a sharp Zcash rally that has pushed ZEC back above $1,200.

DCG Affiliate Accounts for $100M

The September 8 SEC filing provides an important breakdown of the fund’s recent growth. DCG International Investments Ltd. acquired approximately $100 million of ZCSH shares through an authorized participant by contributing exactly 85,705.32563297 ZEC rather than cash.

DCG International is a wholly owned indirect subsidiary of Digital Currency Group. DCG is also the indirect parent of Grayscale Investments Sponsors, the sponsor of ZCSH. That makes DCG International an affiliate of both the sponsor and the fund.

The shares received by DCG have no special preference rights and are economically equivalent to other ZCSH shares, according to the filing.

The transaction itself is therefore disclosed rather than hidden, but it matters when interpreting the headline AUM figure. Approximately one-fifth of the $500 million milestone corresponds to this related-party investment.

Grayscale separately reported more than $70 million in cumulative inflows during ZCSH’s first two weeks as an exchange-traded product.

Those figures should not be used to conclude that the remaining $330 million represents new outside investment. ZCSH existed previously as the Grayscale Zcash Trust, and AUM also changes when the market price of its underlying ZEC holdings rises.

ZCSH Holds More Than 550,000 ZEC

ZCSH began trading on NYSE Arca on August 25 after the existing Grayscale Zcash Trust transitioned to exchange trading. Grayscale says ZCSH remains the only exchange-traded product globally dedicated to spot ZEC exposure. The product allows investors to obtain Zcash exposure through brokerage accounts without directly buying and safeguarding the cryptocurrency.

There is an important regulatory distinction. Although commonly described as a Zcash ETF, Grayscale states that ZCSH is not an investment company registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940 and therefore does not carry all the protections associated with conventional 1940 Act ETFs and mutual funds.

ZCSH also launched options trading on NYSE Arca on September 8, giving investors another way to manage or speculate on exposure to the fund.

Zcash Price Returns Above $1,200

The AUM increase has occurred alongside a major rally in the underlying cryptocurrency. ZEC reached roughly $1,249 on September 6, its strongest price since October 2016. Market data show ZEC closing near $1,228 that day after trading around $1,026 a day earlier.

The move temporarily pushed Zcash’s market capitalization above $20 billion. Despite the rally, ZEC remained well below its unusual launch-era all-time high of roughly $3,192 recorded in October 2016.

Price appreciation is particularly relevant to ZCSH’s AUM because the fund directly holds ZEC. As Zcash rises, the dollar value of those existing holdings increases even without equivalent new investor inflows.

Zcash itself combines a 21 million-coin maximum supply and proof-of-work consensus with optional privacy features. Its shielded transactions use zero-knowledge cryptography to conceal transaction information while allowing the network to verify validity.

Conclusion

ZCSH crossing $500 million in assets shows that Grayscale’s Zcash product has reached substantial scale shortly after moving onto NYSE Arca. However, AUM and external investor demand should not be treated as the same measurement.

Grayscale has explicitly identified more than $70 million in cumulative post-listing inflows, while another $100 million came from DCG International, an affiliate within the same corporate group. The remainder of the fund’s AUM cannot simply be classified as new outside capital because ZCSH inherited assets from the former Grayscale Zcash Trust and has benefited from ZEC’s sharp price appreciation.

For investors assessing demand for Zcash, net external flows, ZEC holdings and ZEC’s market price should therefore be evaluated separately rather than relying on the $500 million AUM figure alone.
