Ripple Unlocks 1 Billion XRP as RLUSD Debate Intensifies Over Token Demand

Ripple’s latest release of 1 billion XRP from its monthly escrow program has renewed debate over the relationship between its native cryptocurrency and its RLUSD stablecoin. The November 1 unlock involved two transactions of 500 million XRP each, valued at approximately $626.43 million apiece. At the same time, Ripple’s stablecoin executives argue that expanding RLUSD adoption could strengthen XRP demand because the token remains essential for paying transaction fees on the XRP Ledger (XRPL). The developments have drawn attention to Ripple’s token distribution strategy and growing institutional ambitions.

RLUSD Adoption Supports XRP Demand

Ripple’s stablecoin business is becoming an increasingly important part of its blockchain strategy. Jack McDonald, Ripple’s senior vice president of stablecoins, has argued that greater RLUSD activity on the XRP Ledger creates additional utility for XRP rather than replacing its role.

McDonald explained that transactions involving RLUSD on XRPL require XRP to pay network fees. These fees, commonly called gas fees, compensate the network for processing transactions.

He emphasized that issuing, transferring and deploying RLUSD on the ledger generates activity requiring XRP. Consequently, expanding stablecoin adoption could support the native token through increased network usage.

McDonald also highlighted the growing institutional interest in RLUSD, noting that its adoption on XRPL has been stronger than on alternative networks, including Ethereum.

Several developments could strengthen institutional adoption:

  • BNY Mellon: Provides institutional custody infrastructure for RLUSD reserves.
  • Cross River: Represents another connection between Ripple’s stablecoin operations and traditional financial services.
  • OCC banking charter: Ripple received final approval for a National Trust Bank charter in October 2026.
  • Moody’s rating: RLUSD received A2 long-term and P-1 short-term investment-grade ratings in October.

Ripple Releases 1 Billion XRP

According to Whale Alert, Ripple released 1 billion XRP on November 1 through two separate transactions of 500 million tokens each. Each transfer carried an estimated value of $626.43 million, bringing the combined valuation to approximately $1.25 billion.

Ripple established its escrow mechanism in 2017, placing 55 billion XRP into scheduled releases to make token distribution more predictable. The monthly unlock does not mean the entire amount enters circulation or becomes immediately available for sale.

Ripple has historically returned approximately 700 million XRP from monthly releases to escrow, retaining the remaining 300 million for operational requirements, liquidity management and ecosystem development. However, the November relocking amount should not be treated as confirmed until corresponding blockchain transactions are verified.

This distinction matters because escrow releases are often interpreted as potential selling pressure. The actual market impact depends on how much XRP Ripple distributes, retains or locks again.

XRP Faces a Changing Ripple Strategy

The latest unlock follows an active October for Ripple and the broader XRP Ledger ecosystem. The company’s Swell 2026 conference and XRP Seoul event highlighted its efforts to expand institutional relationships and blockchain adoption.

The growing role of RLUSD has raised questions about whether Ripple’s stablecoin business could eventually compete with XRP for attention and utility. However, McDonald’s comments indicate that the company views the two assets as complementary.

RLUSD facilitates dollar-denominated payments, while XRP provides transaction fees and liquidity functions across the ecosystem.

Conclusion

Ripple’s November escrow release highlights the importance of distinguishing scheduled token unlocks from actual market supply. Although releasing 1 billion XRP may attract investor attention, historical relocking practices suggest that the entire amount does not necessarily reach the open market. Meanwhile, expanding RLUSD adoption could generate additional transaction activity on XRPL and reinforce XRP’s underlying utility. Ultimately, the relationship between the two assets will depend on stablecoin adoption, institutional participation and Ripple’s management of its remaining escrow holdings.
