USD/JPY Forecast: Yen Pair Stalls Below 158.56 as Bulls Face Key Resistance

The USD/JPY pair eased below 158.30 on Tuesday after another failed attempt to break above its 200-day simple moving average (SMA) near 158.56. The broader outlook remains constructive for the US dollar, supported by demand for defensive assets and the gap between US and Japanese interest rates. However, softer Japanese producer-price data and the approaching US inflation releases have left traders weighing competing signals. A sustained move above 158.56 could reopen the path toward 159.00 and 160.00, while a decline below 157.50 would put lower support levels back in focus.

Japan Inflation Cools, but BoJ Stays Alert

Japan’s September Producer Price Index (PPI) fell 0.3% from the previous month, matching August’s decline and missing expectations for a 0.5% increase. Annual producer-price inflation slowed to 6.8% from 7.6%, according to the Bank of Japan. The latest figures indicate that input-cost pressures are easing, although inflation remains elevated.

The data could reduce the urgency for an immediate policy adjustment, but it does not eliminate the possibility of further rate increases. BoJ Governor Kazuo Ueda has emphasized the importance of keeping underlying inflation near the central bank’s 2% target. Policymakers must assess whether persistent costs are feeding through to consumer prices and wages before deciding their next move.

The yen showed little reaction to the latest policy signals, leaving the dollar-yen exchange rate sensitive to developments in the United States. A risk-averse market can support the dollar, while expectations of tighter Japanese policy may limit further gains in the pair.

US Inflation Data Could Move USD/JPY

Investors are looking toward the US Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Producer Price Index reports for clues about the Federal Reserve’s next policy steps. Strong inflation readings could reinforce expectations for restrictive US monetary policy and support the dollar through higher expected returns on dollar-denominated assets. Cooler figures could weaken that support and give the yen room to recover.

The main drivers to monitor are:

  • US inflation: Hotter-than-expected data could lift the dollar.
  • BoJ guidance: Signals of further rate increases may support the yen.
  • Risk sentiment: Defensive demand can influence both currencies and amplify short-term swings.

With these events approaching, traders may hesitate to push USD/JPY decisively higher until a fresh catalyst emerges.

USD/JPY Technical Levels and Outlook

The pair trades near 158.30, with the 200-day SMA at 158.56 acting as immediate resistance. The daily Relative Strength Index (RSI) near 55 indicates modest positive momentum, while the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) remains slightly positive. Neither indicator, however, confirms a decisive breakout.

The key levels are:

  • Resistance: 158.56, followed by 159.00 and the psychological 160.00 level.
  • Initial support: 157.50, near the October 6 and October 8 lows.
  • Lower support: 156.38, followed by 155.34.

Conclusion

USD/JPY retains a constructive bias, but the repeated rejection near 158.56 shows that buyers need stronger momentum to extend the advance. A confirmed break above that average could bring 159.00 and 160.00 into view. Conversely, a move below 157.50 would weaken the near-term structure and expose support at 156.38. US inflation data and further BoJ guidance are likely to determine which side gains control.
