Gold Holds Near $4,181 After 1.6% Gain as Oil Eases Inflation Pressure Now

Gold prices steadied on Wednesday after gaining 1.6% in the previous session, with easing crude prices providing some relief from inflation concerns while elevated U.S. Treasury yields continued to limit demand for bullion. XAU/USD was little changed at $4,180.54 an ounce, while Gold Futures rose 0.8% to $4,212.01.

Other precious metals were mixed. Silver slipped 0.2% to $61.37, while platinum gained 0.1% to $1,715.51. The U.S. Dollar Index was marginally higher at 101.41.

The immediate support for gold came from weaker oil prices, which reduced some of the inflation pressure generated by the Middle East conflict.

Oil Retreat Eases Inflation Pressure

Crude prices declined as Saudi Arabia restored part of the capacity of its East-West pipeline, providing an alternative route that bypasses the Strait of Hormuz. The improvement helped ease concerns about supply shortages even as uncertainty surrounding the waterway remained unresolved.

The oil retreat matters for gold because sustained energy inflation can reinforce expectations for tighter Federal Reserve policy. Lower crude prices, by contrast, can reduce pressure on headline inflation and give policymakers more room to assess incoming economic data.

Markets are now focused on key U.S. inflation and employment releases:

  • PCE inflation: The Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge is due Thursday.
  • Nonfarm payrolls: Friday’s employment report could reshape expectations for future rate decisions.
  • Fed policy: Traders have reduced the implied probability of an October hike to around 50% from roughly 70%.

New York Fed President John Williams said there was no urgency for another increase after the Fed raised rates by 25 basis points in September. He still indicated that one additional hike later this year could be appropriate if the economy develops in line with his forecast.

Treasury Yields Keep Gold Under Pressure

Despite the softer oil market, the bond market remains a major obstacle for gold. The 30-year Treasury yield reached about 5.62%, its highest level since 2002, while the 10-year yield remained near multi-year highs.

Higher yields increase the opportunity cost of holding gold because bullion does not generate interest income. A stronger dollar can add another layer of pressure by making dollar-priced gold more expensive for international buyers.

Gold therefore enters the final days of September caught between easing oil-driven inflation risks and restrictive financial conditions. Spot gold has also faced a difficult month, with the metal on track to finish September almost 6% lower.

Conclusion

Gold’s recovery is facing competing forces. Falling oil prices and reduced October rate-hike expectations have improved the near-term backdrop, but elevated Treasury yields and continued inflation risks are limiting the upside. The next major catalysts are the PCE inflation report and nonfarm payrolls data, which could influence expectations for the Federal Reserve’s remaining policy decisions this year.
