A recent report by 10x Research revisited the debate over Bitcoin’s elusive creator, Satoshi Nakamoto.
The report analyzes two prominent theories: one suggesting that cryptographer Nick Szabo could be the mind behind Bitcoin, and another positing potential involvement by the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA).
With the upcoming HBO documentary “Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery,” interest in identifying the real Satoshi Nakamoto has surged.
Nick Szabo, a pivotal figure in cryptocurrency’s history, is known for developing the concept of “smart contracts” in the 1990s and proposing “Bit Gold,” which shares striking similarities to Bitcoin’s structure.
Despite denying his involvement, 10x Research highlights the alignment between Szabo’s philosophies and Satoshi’s 2008 Bitcoin white paper.
Interestingly, Polymarket betting odds currently place a 27.9% chance of Szabo being revealed as Satoshi in the upcoming HBO documentary. This puts him ahead of other candidates, such as cryptographer Len Sassaman (14%) and Blockstream CEO Adam Back (4.3%).
NSA’s Role: Another Theory to Consider
The 10x Research report also explores the theory that the NSA could have been involved in Bitcoin’s creation. The agency’s 1996 research paper titled “How to Make a Mint: The Cryptography of Anonymous Electronic Cash” laid out a framework that resembles key aspects of Bitcoin.
Additionally, in 2001, NSA cryptographer Glenn Lilly filed a patent for the “device for and method of one-way cryptographic hashing,” known today as the widely used SHA-256 hashing algorithm—an essential component in Bitcoin’s mining process.
While no direct evidence links the NSA to Satoshi Nakamoto, the report sheds light on the agency’s early interest and technological capabilities in digital cryptography.
The mystery continues: HBO’s Big Reveal?
Despite the detailed research, no definitive proof links Nick Szabo or the NSA to Bitcoin’s creation. Markus Thielen, founder of 10x Research, believes that even after the HBO documentary airs, the mystery may remain unresolved.
“The real Satoshi might need to make a public statement, particularly if they decide to sell the Bitcoin they hold,” Thielen commented.
The true identity of Satoshi Nakamoto continues to elude the public, and the upcoming documentary may only add another layer of intrigue to the ongoing saga.
Key Takeaways:
- Szabo Leads Polymarket Odds: Nick Szabo is the frontrunner to be identified as Satoshi Nakamoto in the upcoming HBO documentary, with 27.9% odds.
- NSA’s Influence on Bitcoin: NSA’s early cryptographic research and patented SHA-256 technology raise questions about its potential involvement in Bitcoin’s creation.
- Satoshi Mystery Unsolved: Despite ongoing research and speculation, no conclusive evidence has yet identified the true creator of Bitcoin.
