Nvidia has joined the growing wave of unconventional Big Tech transactions by agreeing to license artificial intelligence technology from startup Groq while hiring its top executives, a move that strengthens Nvidia’s position in the fast-evolving market for AI inference. The arrangement reflects a broader industry pattern in which major technology firms secure talent and intellectual property without pursuing full acquisitions.
Groq confirmed that Nvidia will receive a non-exclusive license to its chip technology and that founder Jonathan Ross, Groq president Sunny Madra, and several senior engineers will join Nvidia. Ross previously helped launch Google’s in-house AI chip efforts, making him a high-profile addition to Nvidia’s leadership pipeline. Financial terms were not disclosed, though Groq emphasized it will continue operating independently under CEO Simon Edwards.
The agreement comes as Nvidia seeks to defend its dominance while artificial intelligence workloads shift from model training toward inference—the process of running trained models in real-world applications. While Nvidia leads decisively in training hardware, inference has become more competitive, attracting rivals ranging from Advanced Micro Devices to specialized startups.
Why Inference Is the New Battleground
Inference now represents one of the fastest-growing segments of the AI semiconductor market. Unlike training, which demands massive computing clusters, inference prioritizes speed, efficiency, and cost per query. Groq has built its reputation around this niche.
Groq’s chips rely on on-chip SRAM memory, avoiding external high-bandwidth memory that has become a bottleneck across the semiconductor industry. This design enables faster response times for chatbots and real-time AI tools, though it limits the size of models that can be deployed.
