U.S. Stock Futures Rise as Trump Iran Talks Boost Markets and Oil Falls

U.S. stock futures climbed after Trump announced Iran talks, sending oil prices sharply lower and lifting investor sentiment. Here’s why markets rallied and what investors are watching this week.

U.S. stock index futures traded higher on Monday after President Donald Trump announced that negotiations with Iran would begin later in the day, raising hopes of easing tensions in the Middle East. The prospect of diplomacy pushed oil prices sharply lower and improved investor sentiment, while optimism surrounding strong Big Tech earnings and another busy week of corporate results further supported U.S. equity markets.

U.S. Stock Futures Gain as Trump Announces Iran Talks

U.S. equity futures pointed to a stronger opening on Wall Street as investors reacted positively to geopolitical developments and falling energy prices. Before the opening bell, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures climbed 482 points (0.9%), S&P 500 futures gained 40 points (0.5%), and Nasdaq-100 futures added 74 points (0.3%). According to Reuters, President Donald Trump told reporters on Sunday that negotiations with Iran would begin Monday afternoon and said a deal involving the strategically important Strait of Hormuz was “imminent.”

The comments followed Trump’s decision over the weekend to cancel a planned military strike on Iran after discussions with regional mediators, raising hopes that both sides could move toward diplomacy after weeks of escalating tensions.

The geopolitical optimism immediately affected commodity markets. Brent crude oil fell more than 5% to around $83.5 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude dropped nearly 6% to below $80 per barrel, as traders reduced the geopolitical risk premium that had driven oil prices higher in recent weeks. Lower oil prices also improved expectations that energy-driven inflation could ease in the coming months, a development that investors generally view as positive for both consumers and businesses.

Why Markets Reacted Positively

Markets responded positively because reduced geopolitical tensions lower the risk of disruptions to global oil supplies, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, which handles roughly 20% of the world’s oil shipments. Falling crude prices ease inflationary pressures, potentially reducing costs for businesses and consumers while improving corporate profit margins.

Technology stocks also contributed to the positive sentiment. According to Reuters, investors continued buying AI-related technology shares after stronger-than-expected quarterly earnings from Microsoft and Amazon reassured markets that massive investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure continue to generate strong business growth. Those results helped ease concerns that had weighed heavily on technology stocks throughout July.

Wall Street Turns Attention to Earnings and Economic Data

Wall Street entered August following a volatile July in which concerns over artificial intelligence spending, interest rates, and geopolitical tensions pressured major indexes. The Nasdaq Composite declined approximately 3.2% during July, underperforming the broader market as investors questioned whether heavy AI-related capital spending would continue delivering strong returns.

Despite those concerns, the corporate earnings season has remained resilient. According to Reuters, roughly 86% of S&P 500 companies that have reported second-quarter results have exceeded analysts’ earnings expectations, well above the long-term historical average. Investors are now awaiting another busy earnings week, with Palantir Technologies reporting Monday, followed by AMD and SpaceX on Tuesday. Other major companies including Caterpillar, Merck, and McDonald’s are also scheduled to release quarterly results over the coming days.

Beyond corporate earnings, markets are focused on the U.S. July nonfarm payrolls report, due Friday. Economists expect another month of solid job growth, which could reinforce expectations that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates elevated or consider further tightening if inflation remains persistent. Last week’s Federal Reserve meeting indicated that more policymakers continue to support additional rate increases if inflation does not moderate sufficiently.

What’s Next for Markets?

Investors will closely watch developments in the U.S.-Iran negotiations for signs of further de-escalation, while monitoring oil prices for any renewed volatility. Attention will also remain on quarterly earnings from several major U.S. companies, particularly within the technology sector, as investors assess whether AI-related spending continues to deliver strong financial returns.

In addition, Friday’s U.S. nonfarm payrolls report will be one of the week’s most closely watched economic releases, as it could significantly influence expectations for future Federal Reserve interest rate decisions and overall market direction.
