Solana Hits 169.9 Million Daily Transactions After 66% Network Capacity Boost

Solana sets a record with 169.9 million daily transactions after a 66% capacity upgrade, highlighting growing blockchain adoption despite weaker network fees.

Record Activity Signals Rising Demand

Solana achieved a historic milestone on August 4, processing 169.9 million non-vote transactions in a single day, according to Blockworks data. The figure marks the highest level of genuine network activity ever recorded on the blockchain. Unlike total transaction counts, non-vote transactions exclude validator communications used for network consensus, offering a clearer picture of real user and decentralized application engagement.

The record reflects accelerating demand across Solana’s ecosystem rather than technical overhead. On a weekly basis, transaction volumes have already exceeded the previous peak reached in early February and stand approximately 55% above the lows recorded in April. The trend indicates that both developers and users are increasingly relying on the network as blockchain adoption expands.

A major contributor to this surge was a significant infrastructure upgrade completed only days before the record was established. The improvement provided additional capacity that applications rapidly consumed, demonstrating that existing demand had already been approaching previous network limits.

66% Upgrade Unlocks More Capacity

On July 29, Solana introduced the SIMD-0286 upgrade at the beginning of a new network epoch. The enhancement increased the maximum compute limit per block from 60 million to 100 million compute units, representing a 66% increase in processing capacity.

Compute units measure the amount of computational work that can be performed within each block. Raising this ceiling enables validators to process substantially more transactions while preserving Solana’s signature 400-millisecond block times.

The upgrade, developed by Jito Labs engineer Lucas Bruder, represents the largest throughput expansion since Solana launched. Its implementation became possible after more than 70% of staked SOL adopted XDP kernel-bypass networking, allowing validators to transfer data more efficiently by reducing operating system bottlenecks.

Before the upgrade, the network was already operating close to capacity. Data from the Solana Foundation showed that:

  • 11.2% of blocks reached at least 56 million compute units.
  • The previous 60 million-unit ceiling was frequently tested during periods of heavy trading.
  • Higher demand often resulted in limited blockspace rather than unused capacity.
  • Additional compute headroom immediately attracted new transaction flow.

Growth Brings New Opportunities and Challenges

A significant share of Solana’s transaction volume originates from automated trading infrastructure. Blockworks Research estimates that proprietary automated market makers account for roughly 20% of all Solana transactions, continuously updating prices, executing arbitrage opportunities, and maintaining decentralized exchange liquidity.

Payments activity is also expanding. On the same day the transaction record was established, Western Union’s Stablecard launched on Solana through Rain across 37 markets, utilizing the USDPT stablecoin. Although the token’s circulation remains relatively modest at approximately 7.4 million, the deployment demonstrates growing institutional confidence in Solana’s scalability.

Despite these operational achievements, financial metrics tell a more nuanced story. Network fees totaled $51 million during the second quarter, marking Solana’s weakest quarterly fee revenue since Q3 2023. Decentralized exchange volumes have also fallen to their lowest levels since September 2024.

The divergence reflects a changing transaction mix. High-fee speculative trading, particularly around memecoins, has cooled, while lower-cost market-making activity and stablecoin payments now account for a larger share of network usage. As a result, Solana is processing more transactions than ever before, yet generating less revenue per transaction—a trade-off that strengthens its position as scalable blockchain infrastructure while creating new questions about long-term monetization.
