US Dollar Index Holds Below 100 as CPI Data and Iran Risks Loom

US Dollar Index holds near 99.75 below 100 as traders await US CPI data, Fed rate signals and rising Iran tensions that could drive the dollar’s next move.

The US Dollar Index (DXY) is consolidating below the psychologically important 100.00 level as traders await fresh US inflation data and monitor escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran. The index was trading near 99.75 during Tuesday’s Asian session, little changed after gaining ground in the previous session.

DXY Holds Near 99.75 Amid Iran Tensions

The dollar is finding support from renewed geopolitical uncertainty, although traders remain reluctant to establish large positions ahead of key US economic data. The DXY measures the US dollar against a basket of major currencies and is closely watched as a gauge of broader dollar strength.

Tensions between the United States and Iran have added a fresh layer of uncertainty to financial markets. US President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s demand for compensation related to wartime damage, arguing that Tehran was responsible for the destruction and loss of life. Iran, meanwhile, has ruled out renewed negotiations with Trump and indicated that it will wait until the end of his presidential term on January 20, 2029, before reconsidering talks.

That deterioration in diplomatic relations has encouraged investors to rebuild some of the dollar’s traditional safe-haven premium. If tensions intensify further, demand for the US currency could increase as markets reassess global economic and financial risks.

Oil Risks Keep Fed Rate Bets Alive

The geopolitical standoff is also complicating expectations for energy markets. Hopes for a quick reopening of the Strait of Hormuz have weakened, while shipping activity through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait remains disrupted by the Houthi naval blockade against Saudi Arabia.

Higher crude oil prices could add pressure to inflation, making the Federal Reserve’s policy outlook more difficult to navigate. Persistent energy costs may discourage policymakers from easing monetary conditions quickly and could keep US Treasury yields elevated, providing additional support for the DXY.

Key factors influencing the dollar include:

  • DXY near 99.75, below the 100.00 threshold.
  • Middle East tensions are supporting safe-haven demand.
  • Oil supply risks are adding to inflation concerns.
  • Higher Treasury yields remain supportive for the dollar.

US CPI Becomes the Next Major Catalyst

Despite these supportive factors, dollar bulls are avoiding aggressive bets before the latest US inflation figures. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is due Wednesday and will provide an important indication of whether price pressures are cooling or remaining persistent.

The Producer Price Index (PPI) follows on Thursday, giving markets another measure of inflationary pressure across the US economy. Together, the reports could influence expectations for the Federal Reserve’s next policy decisions and determine whether the DXY can reclaim the 100.00 level.

For now, the dollar remains caught between safe-haven demand and uncertainty over monetary policy. A hotter-than-expected CPI reading could strengthen Treasury yields and push DXY higher, while softer inflation could revive expectations for a more accommodative Fed and limit the dollar’s upside.
