XRP Ledger Activates Delegation as $4.26B in Tokenized Assets Draws Attention

The XRP Ledger (XRPL) activated a new account-permission feature on October 8, 2026, allowing businesses to delegate specific tasks without sharing the keys controlling their main accounts. The upgrade, known as PermissionDelegationV1_1, could help banks, stablecoin issuers and tokenized-asset managers separate payment operations from compliance responsibilities. The development comes as the network supports substantial digital-asset activity, including an average of $3.72 billion in tokenized assets and $539 million in Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin, according to figures cited by CoinDesk. Security warnings and a separate validator-counting issue remain important considerations.

XRP Ledger Enables Delegated Permissions

The new feature allows an account owner to authorize another account to perform specified transactions without transferring control of the primary account’s keys. The delegated account signs transactions using its own credentials and can act only within the permissions granted to it.

According to XRPL Dashboard, PermissionDelegationV1_1 activated on October 8 after meeting the network’s validator-approval requirements. Amendments require support from at least 80% of trusted validators for two consecutive weeks. With 35 validators in the current list, at least 29 must support the change.

The practical benefit is a more controlled approach to account security. A stablecoin issuer, for example, could authorize a compliance account to approve customers while keeping its main signing keys offline. A separate account could handle approved payment operations without receiving unrestricted control over company funds.

Each delegated account can receive up to 10 permissions. These define which types of actions it may perform rather than automatically setting transaction spending limits. Account owners can also revise or revoke delegated access.

Tokenized Assets and RLUSD Drive Interest

The upgrade could help financial institutions implement operational controls directly on the blockchain. Banks commonly separate payment processing, customer verification and compliance oversight among different employees. Delegated permissions provide a way to enforce comparable divisions between accounts on the ledger.

CoinDesk reported that the XRP Ledger held an average of $3.72 billion in tokenized assets during the second quarter, alongside $539 million in RLUSD. Combined, the reported balances totaled approximately $4.26 billion.

Tokenized assets represent financial or other real-world assets through blockchain-based tokens. Stablecoins, meanwhile, aim to maintain a relatively stable value against a reference currency, such as the US dollar. Both applications can require carefully managed transaction authority, making permission controls relevant to institutional adoption.

However, these asset balances do not establish that the upgrade itself will generate additional inflows or increase XRP’s market price.

PaymentBurn Warning and Validator Risks

Despite the upgrade’s activation, one specific permission remains subject to a security warning. Official XRPL documentation advises against delegating PaymentBurn until a separate fix activates. Under certain conditions, the permission could allow a delegated account to create issued tokens when it was intended to destroy them. The warning concerns issued tokens, not newly minted XRP.

Other technical issues also warrant attention. A GitHub issue reported that some servers may stop counting a validator after it changes a routine security key, even when that validator remains online. A proposed patch would use permanent validator identifiers to address the problem.

At the time of the report, the separate PaymentBurn fix had received 27 of the 35 validator votes, short of the 29 needed to begin its two-week approval period.

Conclusion

The XRP Ledger’s delegated-permission upgrade introduces a more granular way for businesses to manage blockchain access while retaining control of their primary keys. Its relevance extends to stablecoin operations, tokenized funds and institutional payment workflows. However, the outstanding PaymentBurn warning and validator-counting issue show why implementation and security safeguards remain essential. Wider adoption will depend on reliable execution, effective risk controls and demonstrable demand from businesses using the network.
