Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) has sparked debate by rejecting the widely held belief that centralized exchange (CEX) listings significantly influence crypto prices. In a recent statement, CZ argued that while exchange listings provide liquidity, they do not inherently dictate a token’s long-term value.
Historically, newly listed cryptocurrencies have experienced sharp price spikes, reinforcing the perception that CEX listings drive valuations. However, CZ dismissed this notion, stating, “In fact, listing a coin shouldn’t affect its price in the first place.” His comments contradict prevailing market trends, leaving many investors questioning the true impact of exchange listings.
DEXs vs. CEXs: CZ’s Perspective
CZ emphasized that decentralized exchanges (DEXs) operate differently, allowing all tokens to be listed without the centralized control seen in traditional exchanges.
- DEXs provide open access to a vast array of tokens, letting traders decide their worth.
- Liquidity remains a challenge, as many tokens face limited trading volumes.
- Market risks are high, with volatility often more extreme than on CEXs.
CZ’s remarks have fueled speculation that he may favor DEX models over centralized exchanges like Binance, although he stopped short of explicitly endorsing one over the other.
BNB and MUBARAK Coin Listings Raise Questions
Despite downplaying the influence of listings, CZ acknowledged BNB perpetual futures being added to Coinbase. He noted, “No one applied for this. Focus on building. Listing comes naturally.”
Meanwhile, the MUBARAK coin listing has added further intrigue. Binance recently listed the token, yet its price plummeted 40% to $0.09558, seemingly reinforcing CZ’s claim that listings don’t guarantee price appreciation. However, earlier price movements suggest otherwise:
- MUBARAK gained 20% after a perpetual contract launch on a CEX.
- Another token, CZ’s Dog (BROCCOLI), rose 10% following its listing.
These cases create mixed signals, raising questions about whether CEX listings truly lack impact or if certain conditions still lead to price surges.
