AUD/USD Price Forecast: 0.15% Drop Puts 0.6900 Support at Risk

AUD/USD is under renewed pressure, trading around 0.6935 in Asian hours on Monday after falling 0.15%. The Australian Dollar is struggling against a resurgent U.S. Dollar as concerns over France’s public finances push investors toward safer assets. The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) climbed about 0.5% to around 102.50 in the latest market snapshot, while the euro weakened as French fiscal and political concerns intensified.

The immediate question for AUD/USD is whether buyers can defend 0.6900. A sustained break below that level would expose 0.6866 and reinforce the pair’s bearish short-term structure.

Dollar Strengthens on France Concerns

The U.S. dollar is benefiting from renewed demand for defensive assets as investors reassess the fiscal outlook in France. The French government formally presented its 2027 budget proposal on Oct. 1, with Finance Minister Roland Lescure seeking to reduce the deficit through tax increases and spending reductions.

Markets remain concerned about whether the government can secure enough parliamentary support for the proposed measures. France’s debt has reached about 119% of GDP, while political uncertainty ahead of the 2027 presidential election is adding to pressure on French assets. The euro subsequently dropped to around $1.1161, its weakest level in 17 months.

That shift in risk appetite has strengthened the dollar and weighed on currencies such as the Australian Dollar.

The latest market move is notable because it comes despite a weaker U.S. employment report. U.S. payrolls increased by only 29,000 in September, well below expectations, while the unemployment rate rose to 4.2%. August payroll growth was also revised down to 133,000 from 162,000.

Fed Bets Shift After Weak Jobs Data

The September Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) report has reduced expectations for an immediate Federal Reserve rate increase. Markets now see substantially lower odds of an October hike following the weak employment data.

That shift would normally weaken the dollar by reducing the expected interest-rate advantage of U.S. assets. Instead, safe-haven demand linked to France’s fiscal stress has provided an offsetting source of dollar strength.

For AUD/USD, this creates a difficult backdrop. The Australian currency can benefit from reduced Fed tightening expectations, but that support is being challenged by broader risk aversion and a stronger dollar.

  • DXY: around 102.50
  • AUD/USD: around 0.6935-0.6939
  • September U.S. payrolls: +29,000
  • U.S. unemployment rate: 4.2%

0.6900 Break Could Open 0.6866

The technical picture remains bearish in the near term. AUD/USD is trading below its 20-day Exponential Moving Average (EMA) near 0.7040, keeping the short-term bias tilted lower.

The psychological 0.7000 level is the first hurdle on any recovery attempt. A move above that threshold would reduce immediate selling pressure, but bulls would still need to reclaim the 20-day EMA at 0.7040 to establish a stronger reversal signal.

Momentum is already stretched. The daily Relative Strength Index (RSI) is near 28, placing it in oversold territory. That does not guarantee a rebound, but it raises the probability of a temporary consolidation or corrective bounce.

The critical downside level is 0.6900. A daily close below it would expose 0.6866, while failure to break the support could allow buyers to attempt a recovery toward 0.7000.

Key AUD/USD levels:

  • Resistance: 0.7000 and 0.7040
  • Immediate support: 0.6900
  • Next downside target: 0.6866
  • Momentum: RSI near 28, indicating oversold conditions

Conclusion

AUD/USD remains vulnerable as the U.S. dollar benefits from safe-haven demand linked to France’s fiscal concerns. The weak U.S. jobs report has reduced October Fed hike expectations, but that has not been enough to reverse dollar strength. Technically, 0.6900 is the decisive level. A break below it would strengthen the case for a move toward 0.6866, while a recovery above 0.7000 and the 0.7040 EMA would be needed to ease the bearish setup.
