Ethereum Staking Hits 43.8M ETH as Yields Fall to 2.63% in Third Quarter

Ethereum staking reached 43.8 million ETH in Q3 2026, but yields fell to 2.63% as fee revenue dropped, raising questions about network value capture.

Ethereum Staking Hits 43.8M ETH as Yields Fall to 2.63% in Third Quarter

Ethereum staking reached a record 43.8 million ETH in the third quarter of 2026, even as annualized returns and transaction-fee revenue declined. Crypto asset manager Bitwise reported that 35.9% of Ethereum’s total supply was staked by the end of September. Net inflows reached 1.99 million ETH, extending the growth streak to six consecutive quarters. The figures highlight a growing commitment to securing the network, but also show that increased participation has not translated into higher rewards or stronger fee income.

Ethereum Staking Rises as Yields Fall

The gross annualized staking yield declined to 2.63% in Q3, down from 2.81% in Q2 and 2.91% in Q1. Staking allows ETH holders to help secure Ethereum’s proof-of-stake blockchain through validators in exchange for rewards.

Bitwise attributed the decline to a larger pool of staked tokens competing for rewards and weaker earnings from transaction fees and maximal extractable value (MEV). Newly issued ETH supplied 96.3% of the quarter’s staking yield, while priority fees and MEV contributed a much smaller share.

The report’s key figures show the difference between network participation and returns:

  • 43.8 million ETH: Total staked by quarter-end.
  • 35.9%: Share of ETH supply committed to staking.
  • 1.99 million ETH: Net staking inflows during Q3.
  • 2.63%: Gross annualized staking yield, down from 2.81% in Q2.

As more ETH enters staking, rewards from issuance are spread across a larger base. This can reduce the percentage return earned on each token, even when the network continues attracting deposits.

Ethereum Fees Drop Despite Network Activity

Ethereum generated 18,210 ETH in combined transaction-fee and MEV revenue during Q3, valued at approximately $40.64 million. Average daily revenue fell 40.2% to 198 ETH from 331 ETH in Q2, reaching its lowest level since the first quarter of 2025.

The decline came despite substantial network usage. Ethereum processed 199.32 million transactions during Q3, slightly below Q2’s 203.85 million but 35.3% higher than a year earlier.

Meanwhile, average costs across four common transaction categories—ETH transfers, ERC-20 transfers, decentralized exchange trades and non-fungible token transactions—fell 67% year over year to $0.45 from $1.35.

Bitwise linked the lower fees to increased network capacity, which eased competition for blockspace. Cheaper transactions can encourage adoption, but they may also reduce the revenue generated by each transaction. The result is a widening gap between Ethereum’s usage growth and its direct fee income.

Solana and Tokenized Markets Expand

Other proof-of-stake networks also recorded lower yields. Solana ended Q3 with 69% of its supply staked, while its gross annualized yield declined to 5.99% from 6.38%. NEAR reported a 46% staking ratio and a 4.87% yield, while Hyperliquid had 436 million HYPE staked at a 2.24% yield.

Solana’s validator count fell from 696 to 659 during the quarter, with Bitwise citing operating-cost pressures. The report also highlighted growing demand for blockchain-based financial products.

Tokenized equity volume on Solana reached $6.93 billion, up 45%. Non-crypto markets represented 36.5% of perpetual futures volume on Hyperliquid, while average daily stock-token volume on Robinhood Chain increased 22-fold from July to September. The new network generated more than $50 million in fees during its first quarter, according to Bitwise.

Conclusion

Ethereum’s record staking balance signals continued participation in network security, but falling yields and fee revenue reveal a separate challenge: converting activity into economic value. Lower transaction costs may support adoption, while staking rewards remain heavily dependent on newly issued ETH. Investors will be watching whether tokenized assets, trading activity and future fee demand can strengthen Ethereum’s revenue profile without undermining its affordability.
