Gold Rebounds 0.5% to $4,192 as Dollar Weakens and Inflation Risks Persist

Gold prices recovered on Tuesday as a weaker US dollar provided support, while escalating Middle East tensions kept investors focused on energy-driven inflation and the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate outlook. Spot gold rose 0.5% to $4,191.76 an ounce, while US gold futures gained 0.6% to $4,215.87. The rebound followed a decline in the previous session, leaving traders cautious ahead of Wednesday’s US Consumer Price Index (CPI) report. The data could influence expectations for monetary policy and determine whether bullion can sustain its recovery.

Middle East Conflict Keeps Inflation in Focus

The geopolitical outlook continued to influence precious metals as attacks involving Iran-backed Houthi forces heightened concerns about regional security and energy supplies. Brent crude approached $106 a barrel in the supplied market snapshot, increasing concerns that prolonged disruptions could keep fuel costs elevated.

Higher energy prices can feed into transportation, manufacturing and household expenses, making inflation harder to control. Although gold is often viewed as a hedge against inflation and geopolitical uncertainty, its performance also depends on interest rates, bond yields and the US dollar.

Gold has faced substantial pressure since the US-Iran conflict escalated in late February. Inflation concerns have strengthened expectations that monetary policy could remain restrictive, reducing the appeal of bullion, which does not pay interest.

At the reported market snapshot, other precious metals also posted mixed movements:

  • Silver: XAG/USD advanced 0.3% to $60.50 an ounce.
  • Platinum: XPT/USD gained 0.3% to $1,697.26.
  • Palladium: XPD/USD increased 0.4% to $1,147.50.
  • US Dollar Index: The index declined 0.2% to 102.43.

However, Reuters reported slightly different prices in its October 13 market update, reflecting the changing market during the session. Investors continued to weigh geopolitical risks against the potential inflationary consequences of higher energy costs.

US CPI Report Could Shift Fed Rate Bets

The September US inflation report, scheduled for Wednesday, October 14, is the next major catalyst for precious metals. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics lists the release for 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time.

Markets are assessing whether persistent price pressures will prompt the Federal Reserve to tighten monetary policy further. Interest-rate swaps indicated roughly a 20% probability of an October rate increase in the supplied market data, although expectations can change quickly as new information emerges.

Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack said Monday that restrictive monetary policy may be needed to contain increasingly broad inflation pressures. Her comments reinforced concerns that policymakers could keep borrowing costs elevated for longer.

The CPI report could shape gold’s near-term direction:

  • Hotter inflation: Stronger expectations for rate increases could pressure bullion through higher yields and a firmer dollar.
  • Cooler inflation: Easing inflation concerns could reduce tightening expectations and support gold prices.

Conclusion

Gold’s rebound to $4,191.76 reflects short-term support from a weaker dollar, but a sustained recovery remains uncertain. Middle East tensions, energy prices and the Federal Reserve’s policy outlook continue to create competing pressures. Wednesday’s CPI report will be crucial in determining whether inflation risks outweigh the support from currency movements. Traders will also monitor Treasury yields and developments in the Middle East for further direction.
