Africa’s $5 Billion Payment Gap Drives Stablecoin Growth Across Borders Fast

Africa’s $5 billion cross-border payment challenge is accelerating stablecoin adoption as businesses seek faster, lower-cost international settlements.

Stablecoins Reshape African Payments

Africa’s digital payments industry is entering a new phase of growth as businesses shift their focus from domestic transactions to international commerce. While mobile money transformed financial access across the continent over the past decade, cross-border payments continue to present costly inefficiencies. Stablecoins are increasingly emerging as an effective settlement tool that works alongside existing banking systems, helping companies move money faster while reducing transaction expenses.

New research from financial technology company PhotonPay suggests that Africa’s greatest payment challenge is no longer financial inclusion. Instead, businesses face the complexity of trading across dozens of national payment systems, currencies, and regulatory environments. Although local digital payment infrastructure has advanced significantly, international transactions still depend heavily on correspondent banking networks that increase both costs and settlement times.

Countries such as Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, and South Africa have developed highly successful mobile-first payment ecosystems. Consumers routinely complete everyday purchases through mobile wallets and instant payment services, making Africa one of the world’s fastest-growing digital finance markets.

Cross-Border Costs Remain High

Domestic payment innovation has not eliminated the barriers facing businesses operating across multiple African markets. According to PhotonPay, the continent operated 33 instant payment systems that processed approximately 65.6 billion transactions during 2024, highlighting the remarkable expansion of local digital commerce.

However, international payments continue to face significant friction because businesses often navigate multiple banking intermediaries and foreign exchange conversions before transactions reach their destinations. The report estimates these inefficiencies generate roughly $5 billion in unnecessary annual costs, while settlement periods frequently extend over several business days.

Key challenges include:

  • Multiple currency conversions increase transaction expenses.
  • Correspondent banking networks delay settlement.
  • Fragmented national payment systems reduce efficiency.
  • Higher foreign exchange costs impact business profitability.

These obstacles limit liquidity and slow trade, particularly for companies expanding commercial relationships across African economies and international markets.

Multi-Rail Finance Gains Momentum

Rather than replacing traditional financial institutions, stablecoins are increasingly becoming an additional payment rail that complements existing infrastructure. Dollar-backed digital assets such as USDC and USDT allow businesses to transfer value quickly while reducing dependence on multiple intermediary banks before converting funds into local currencies through regulated payment providers.

PhotonPay estimates that Sub-Saharan Africa received approximately $205 billion in on-chain transaction value between July 2024 and June 2025, representing a 52% year-over-year increase. The figures indicate growing institutional and commercial adoption instead of purely speculative cryptocurrency activity.

Industry experts increasingly expect future payment infrastructure to combine traditional banking, mobile wallets, instant payment systems, and blockchain networks into a unified ecosystem. Businesses will be able to route transactions through whichever payment rail delivers the fastest settlement and lowest cost, often without customers noticing the underlying technology.

This interoperable model reflects broader global financial trends where blockchain enhances, rather than replaces, conventional banking. As trade between Africa, Asia, and the Middle East expands, businesses require payment systems capable of managing multiple currencies while minimizing delays and foreign exchange expenses.

Africa has already demonstrated how digital innovation can transform domestic finance through mobile payments. The next stage of development is expected to remove friction from international commerce by connecting banking infrastructure with blockchain-based settlement networks. If regulatory modernization continues alongside private-sector investment, the continent could become one of the world’s leading examples of integrated multi-rail payment infrastructure.
