Selling in Telecoms, Metals and Materials Weighs on ASX as Cleanaway Rallies on Takeover News
Selling pressure in Telecoms Services, Metals & Mining and Materials dragged the broader index lower, outweighing strength in select industrial and financial names. Cleanaway’s sharp rally followed news of a takeover proposal, while ASX Ltd advanced amid reporting-season activity. Weakness in resource-linked stocks such as Alcoa and shipbuilder Austal reflected broader caution in materials and industrials. The modest rise in the VIX pointed to slightly elevated uncertainty.
ASX 200 Near Recent Highs as Reporting Season and Commodity Weakness Shape Trading
The S&P/ASX 200 has been trading near recent highs after a strong run earlier in the month, supported by resources and select financials. The previous session had seen the index close lower, continuing a period of mixed performance. Reporting season is underway, with several companies releasing results and updates that are driving stock-specific moves. Commodity prices remained under pressure, with gold and oil both lower, adding to the cautious tone across resource-heavy sectors.
