Hunter Biden Launches LAPTOP Token With 20% Supply Set for Airdrops

Hunter Biden is set to launch the LAPTOP meme coin on September 9, bringing another politically linked cryptocurrency to the market. Built on Coinbase-developed Base, the token has a fixed supply of 1 billion LAPTOP, with 20% reserved for community airdrops and 30% allocated to founders. Some wallets that suffered losses holding Donald Trump’s TRUMP token will qualify for the initial distribution. The launch has already generated criticism from crypto traders, while Base has emphasized that it neither designed nor endorsed the project.

LAPTOP Sets 1 Billion Token Supply

The project takes its name from the laptop Hunter Biden left at a Delaware computer repair shop in 2019. Material attributed to the device became a major political issue ahead of the 2020 U.S. presidential election and was later used in congressional investigations and legal proceedings.

Biden has described LAPTOP as representing “resilience, redemption, and recovery,” while warning buyers that they should not expect him to make the token more valuable. Unlike cryptocurrencies designed around payments or blockchain applications, LAPTOP is primarily a meme token tied to political and cultural attention.

The project has established a maximum supply of 1 billion tokens. Founders, including Biden, receive 30% of the supply. Those tokens are subject to a six-month lock before beginning a gradual vesting process extending over roughly two years.

Another 20% is reserved for community airdrops, split into two 10% distributions. The first tranche represents 100 million tokens. Eligible recipients include some wallets showing losses on the TRUMP meme coin, along with Biden’s Substack subscribers and other designated groups.

That means reports describing the entire 20% allocation as an airdrop exclusively for TRUMP holders overstate the plan.

Political Events Determine Token Burns

Another 30% of LAPTOP’s supply is connected to a list of predetermined political, crypto and project-related outcomes. Depending on how those events resolve, the corresponding tokens are intended either to be permanently burned or directed toward charity.

Reported conditions include the outcome of the 2028 U.S. presidential election, Bitcoin reaching another record high and LAPTOP potentially exceeding TRUMP’s market capitalization. The structure effectively connects a large part of the token supply to future public events rather than traditional network usage. The remaining allocation includes liquidity, project administration, treasury and charitable purposes.

LAPTOP is launching on Base, an Ethereum Layer 2 network developed by Coinbase. However, Base representatives have made clear that deployment does not constitute an endorsement or partnership. Base is permissionless, meaning developers can create and deploy tokens without Coinbase approving individual projects.

That distinction became important after the launch faced criticism from cryptocurrency traders. Base founder Jesse Pollak said the LAPTOP team had contacted Base before launch, but Base decided not to assist with the token’s design or promotion.

The backlash also prompted cryptocurrency exchange Kraken to delete a promotional post about LAPTOP, although that did not establish that any prospective listing had been cancelled.

Conclusion

LAPTOP brings Hunter Biden into the growing market for politically branded meme coins, but its structure carries the same speculative risks associated with the sector. Its 1 billion-token supply, 30% founder allocation, 20% community airdrop and event-linked token mechanism are clearly defined, but none provides a fundamental guarantee of token value.

The September 9 launch may attract attention because of Biden’s name and the planned distribution to some TRUMP-loss wallets. Investors should nevertheless distinguish that attention from underlying utility and verify the official Base contract before interacting with the token, particularly because numerous copycat LAPTOP tokens appeared before the official launch.
