Dogecoin falls 6% after Elon Musk distances himself from the DOGE government initiative as technical weakness and ETF flows shape the token’s outlook.
Dogecoin Falls After Musk Steps Back
Dogecoin (DOGE) came under renewed selling pressure after Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk acknowledged that his involvement with the U.S. government’s Department of Government Efficiency, commonly called DOGE, may have distracted him from leading his companies. The comments triggered another wave of caution among traders, pushing the meme-inspired cryptocurrency down 6% in a single session.
Speaking during an interview with The Economist, Musk reflected on his political involvement after contributing approximately $200 million to Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign. He later accepted a leadership role in the Department of Government Efficiency, an initiative credited with overseeing around $150 billion in federal spending reductions and significant workforce cuts across government agencies.

Looking back, Musk admitted he would have preferred to spend that time building his businesses rather than participating in government reform. Although the Department of Government Efficiency has no formal relationship with Dogecoin, investors have long associated the cryptocurrency with Musk because of his years of public endorsements and social media influence. As a result, even indirect remarks about DOGE continue to affect market sentiment surrounding the digital asset.
Technical Picture Stays Weak
Dogecoin’s broader market structure remains under pressure despite a modest recovery attempt. Crypto analyst CrediBULL Crypto highlighted that DOGE has declined nearly 78% against Bitcoin over the past 20 months, suggesting the token has entered an important long-term accumulation zone on the DOGE/BTC trading pair.
However, the analyst also noted that the U.S. dollar pair could still experience additional downside before presenting an attractive buying opportunity.
Following Thursday’s decline, DOGE attempted a modest 1% rebound to around $0.069. Even so, technical indicators continue to favor sellers after the cryptocurrency lost the key $0.07 support level that had held for several weeks.
The bearish trend is reinforced by major exponential moving averages (EMAs), all positioned above the current price:
- 20-day EMA: $0.073
- 50-day EMA: $0.078
- 100-day EMA: $0.087
- 200-day EMA: $0.103
With every major moving average acting as overhead resistance, bulls face a difficult path toward reversing the current trend.
ETF Activity and Price Outlook
Institutional activity has offered only limited encouragement for Dogecoin investors. According to market data, spot Dogecoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) attracted $345,130 in net inflows on July 21, marking the first positive daily inflow since June 17. However, buying momentum quickly faded, with net flows returning to zero by July 23.
The combination of weak technical indicators and inconsistent institutional demand suggests the market remains cautious despite occasional buying interest.
Investors should monitor several critical developments in the coming sessions:
- A daily close above $0.07 would improve short-term market sentiment.
- Continued rejection below resistance could strengthen bearish momentum.
- Key downside targets remain between $0.055 and $0.058 if selling pressure accelerates.
- Sustained ETF inflows would be needed to support a stronger recovery narrative.
For now, Dogecoin remains trapped in a bearish structure. While Musk’s comments have reignited discussions around the token’s market sensitivity to his public statements, technical signals indicate that price action—not headlines alone—will determine whether DOGE can establish a lasting recovery or continue its downward trend.
